The major workhorse and old standby of the US heavy rocket fleet was retired with a final launch on 19 Oct 05.
The Titan rocket has been in service since 1959, and was used to launch several of the Gemini Missions, but the genesis of the 16 story tall spacecraft was actually bent toward making it an ICBM.
With the end of the Titan comes an end of an era of space travel. The mainstay is being replaced with younger, newer, lower maintenance, and less expensive models (though it sounds like I’m referring to women, I mean the Atlas 5 and Delta 4).
