I have no memory at all of reading this article when it first appeared, and I make sure that I miss none of them.

Thanks for posting it again – well written and highly informative. And completely new history to me.

There was so much spirit – that everyone showed up to vote and chose what they promised to choose.
Does anyone know what the health reasons were, due to which Laura Starcher left her role early? I hope it had nothing to do with an unhappy husband…

I was a field engineer for Bechtel on the Boardman Coal Plant. I had my house built at 176 Rio Senda, overlooking the McNary Dam. I worked with my neighbors and the City Administrator “Jack” to get cable TV installed in Umatilla.
I ran for Umattilla City Council, but was 4th in pursuit of 3 openings, so they appointed me to be Chairman of the City Budget Committee. When one of the council members resigned, shortly after the election, I was appointed to fill his council seat. That was in 1979 and I servered until I moved back to San Francisco late in 1980.
I lived in Umatilla during the Mount St. Helens eruption. I also watched the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” hockey game at the Spencer Rifle, a local Resturant in McNary.
I have fond memories of Umatilla.
I was plesantly suprised to see Robert Fulgrum mention the Blue Bucket Resturant in downtown Umatilla in his 1989 book, “All I really need to know, I learned in Kindergarten”.
Umatilla had a population of about 3,000 in 1980.
Thank you Jennifer for reminding me of that part of my life and the unique history of it.

Welcome to the family, and to my most favorite site! You and your writing style fit in perfectly. I very much enjoyed your article, finding it both enlightening and entertaining. A state I find myself in after reading every article in the DI offerings. Thank you for for maintaining the standards and for proving with your writing and your subject matter, “Women Rock!!!”

Alan Bellows,
Congrats on keeping the lights on another month, and on your latest contributor! But I have to ask, where’s the twinkle in the eye, the spark, that je ne sais quoi your introductions are known for? Is Jennifer not shiny? Brand-spanking? We know she is new.
Don’t let the bastards get you down, Alan. This site is something to be proud of, something I look forward to with glee. Keep it snarky! ;-)

Stef
